Why I like to separate art from artist

I’ve always gone through life believing that you can like someone’s work, without actually liking them as a person. And by contrast, I believe it’s also possible to like an individual, and yet not be a fan of their output. Some people, however, seem to find this difficult to understand, or even think it makes me hypocritical. To me, however, it makes complete sense. In this personal post, I explain why.

A Celebration of Conundrums!

Despite the prank he pulled, Jinji’s housemates come to the decision that his idea to lock himself in a coffin for 24 hours prior to the annual Portal Day celebrations, in order to allow them to surprise him without him getting wind of any plans, was ultimately successful and a great idea. Wanting to plan more surprises for Jinji for this year’s Portal Day celebrations, the Ghosts convince him to lock himself away again, and spend the 24 hours each preparing their own presents for him – each with its own puzzling twist!

Doppelganger

A collaboration between myself and the Deviant Artist, Cat (https://www.deviantart.com/silverbettaCCT), based on a role-play we performed with one another. It serves mainly as an introduction and character building for Cat’s new Gengar OC, Aadvay, but is also a reflection of our newfound friendship with each other, as told through our characters.

This comic is still being worked on, so do keep checking back for further pages; or follow Cat on DeviantArt!

Challenge Unlocked!

The logo for the comic strip, “Challenge Unlocked!”, as appears on Page 3 of the comic.

Wanting to get to know Enigma better, Jinji invites Enigma into his study and asks him to demonstrate his abilities. Enigma considers this an honour, and presents Jinji with a series of 3-dimensional wood jigsaws as examples of the types of puzzle he loves to make. To his surprise, however, Jinji solves them all in record time! Having prided himself in being an expert puzzle maker and locksmith in life, the spirit Enigma is shocked to learn just how skilled Jinji is at puzzles, and decides he needs to step up his game. So he pays a visit to a particular pungent prankster pal of Jinji’s. Together, the two of them create a truly explosive challenge for Jinji to attempt…

The 2024 Birthday Update

Another year has passed, and another Portal Day Celebration has taken place. As per usual, Jinji has received a number of gifts for his special anniversary, two of which are now live here on the Jinji the Gengar website! Feel free to visit the Miscellaneous Art page, where you’ll find a brand new Birthday Artwork from my close friend Kitty the Gengar Queen; then go to the Comics page to find my latest Birthday Comic, “A Series of Sticky Surprises”. This is the result of the experiment I mentioned previously by myself, Kitty and Panda to write separate halves of the same comic blindly from each other — and the result is sure to surprise and delight!

A Series of Sticky Surprises!

Created for Jinji’s 2024 Birthday, this comic was also a writing experiment between Jinji and Kitty the Gengar Queen, with each writing half of the comic without seeing the other’s half. The resulting comic was then sent to Kumada Panda to be drawn and inked, so neither of us knew the contents of the other’s half until just before publication.

Jinji the Gengar is convinced by Enigma to lock himself away for 24 hours inside a coffin, while the rest of the Ghosts — as well as Kitty and Kumada Panda’s Ghost — prepare a special Birthday surprise for him. Of course, Jinji being Jinji, he has a surprise for them too! Neither party is expecting what happens next!
